How to Change the Ribbon on a Typewriter (Step-by-Step with an Olivetti Lettera 32)

At first glance, changing a typewriter ribbon might seem easy. But the truth is, it needs to be placed correctly in order for the machine to work properly, and there are a few little details you need to get right.

In this guide I’ll walk you through the process using an Olivetti Lettera 32, since it’s the most popular model and the one I get the most questions about.

That said, every brand is a bit different, so if you’re unsure about your specific machine, feel free to reach out!

  1. Remove the top cover

Lift the metal lid of the typewriter to expose the ribbon spools.

2. Check the existing ribbon

See if there’s an old ribbon and note how it’s threaded. This will help you later.

3. Remove the old spools

Gently pull out the used spools and keep the small metal retainers (if present, it varies depending on the model and brand)

4. Insert the new spools

Place each new spool in position: one on the left (feeds the ribbon) and one on the right (takes it up)

5. Thread the ribbon behind the guide arm (round metal)

Pass the ribbon behind the small round wire guide on the side.

5. Pass the ribbon through the fork guide

Insert it into the small metal slot that keeps it aligned. From the inside starting on the right to the outside (right). Between the two small metals.

7. Thread the ribbon through the ribbon vibrator

Place it in the center mechanism that moves up and down when you type.

8. Secure both sides

Make sure the ribbon sits straight, not twisted, and is properly set on both sides.

9. Tighten the ribbon

Turn one of the spools slightly until the ribbon is taut, not loose.

10. Replace the retainers

Put back the grey metal holders that secure the spools and close the lid.

And that’s it! Just keep in mind that every typewriter brand has its own system.

I’ll be posting a guide for each model, with detailed instructions on how to fit the ribbon depending on the brand.
